For the moment, the mountains, streams and communities of Appalachia can breathe a sigh of relief.
Last week, the Environmental Protection Agency’s regional offices announced their support for EPA headquarters’ recommendation that all 79 pending mountaintop removal permits be submitted to an extended 60-day review process.
That’s great news, and a testament to your efforts to let the EPA know that the public is deeply opposed to blowing up America’s oldest mountains for the short term profits of Big Coal.
Yet this an administrative approach is only a short-term strategy to stop the destruction of our mountains. To permanently end the destructive practice of mountaintop removal coal mining, Congress must pass the Clean Water Protection Act (HR 1310) in the House and the Appalachia Restoration Act (S 696) in the Senate.
If you haven’t already done so, can you email your Representative and Senators today and ask them to support the Clean Water Protection Act and the Appalachia Restoration Act?

The last few months have seen tremendous momentum in the effort to stop mountaintop removal coal mining.
We need to keep that momentum going — and members of Congress need to know that while these first steps by the Administration are appreciated, the American public expects permanent protection for our mountains and streams.
Please contact your members of congress today.
Thank you for everything you do.
