The version of the National Memorial for the Mountains that is included inside of the Google Earth menu could not include all features of the memorial because of some technical constraints. Below, you can download the full-featured National Memorial for the Mountains as well as some additional Google Earth files.

Full-Featured National Memorial for the Mountains
Click on the image to download the full-featured version of the National Memorial for the Mountains. Unlike the version found in the “Featured Content” menu of Google Earth, this file allows users to navigate the features through the menu, take use the “play” function to take automatic tours, and mre. The layers in this file include:

  • Featured Mountains - In depth stories with links to audio and video about 22 Mountains destroyed by mountaintop removal.
  • Mine Site Tour - A high-resolution tour of a mountaintop removal site.
  • Historic Image Overlays - Links to high-resolution overlays of featured mountains before and after mining.
  • All Mountains - Markers and information for more than 470 mountains destroyed by mountaintop removal.

Complete set of High-Resolution “Before and After” Overlays
Click on the image to download the complete set of “before and after” overlays for 16 mountains destroyed by mountaintop removal. Downloading these overlays prior to touring the National Memorial for the Mountains provides a more realistic view of the current landscape.

Sludge Dams in Appalachia

Large Mine Site Overlayed onto 36 U.S. Cities
The Hobet mining complex near Mud, West Virginia is one of the largest contiguous mountaintop removal sites in Appalachia. It stretches for more than 7 miles and covers more than 10,000 acres (15 square miles). Click on the image to download a file comparing the size of this mine site to 36 cities across the U.S.

3-D Model of a Dragline
