The 4th Annual End Mountaintop Removal Week in Washington promises to be a truly historic event. With a new congress and administration, we have a real opportunity to pass the Clean Water Protection Act in the House of Representatives this year! The CWPA will go a long way to ending mountaintop removal coal mining.

Last year’s week in Washington was a tremendous success — and a lot of fun. More than 120 people from 19 states came to Washington, holding more than 150 meetings with Congressional offices.

The result? People like you helped us gain 8 new co-sponsors for the CWPA — in just three days in Washington. We ended 2008 and the 110th Congress with co-sponsors.

We are proud to include the End MTR
Week in Washington as part of:

PPC

What Past Participants Have Said:

“The Week in Washington allowed me to dive head first into our political process. It really gave me a sense of place in the broader community of Appalachia and gave me a great foundation of knowledge and support that I can draw upon as I expand my involvement in the movement.” -Cody Simpkins, Morehead State student, Magoffin County, KY.

“The 2008 Week in Washington changed my life for the better in countless ways. Not only did I realize that it truly is “the people’s house” and our voice and presence on the Hill CAN make a difference, but I gained incredible, meaningful friendships that will last a lifetime.” -Steph Pistello, New York, NY

“As Christians we are called to be good stewards of the Earth and to protect the rights of all people. It was truly an honor to stand in solidarity with people of Appalachia directly affected by MTR and to join my voice with theirs during lobby visits at the offices of Illinois Congressmen. I cannot think of a better way to use my time and energy.” -Maribeth Meaux, Joliet, IL

“I’m a pretty active citizen and call Washington DC a lot. It was great to put a face with people I have talked to on the phone. It was also really great to network with other people that have the same frame of mind that we do. I live near the extraction end of coal, and it was very interesting to meet people who live on the burning end of coal,” -Carl “Buck” Shoupe, third-generation disabled union coal miner, Harlan County, KY
